The Genealogy Group of Pocahontas County was formed in spring 2004. The Genealogy Group partners with two strong organizations in the County, the McClintic Library in Marlinton and the Pocahontas Historical Society.  The Historical Society has been the vigilant advocate for all things historical for over 60 years.  Their Museum, located on Rt 219 in Marlinton, is chock full of farm tools and equipment, railroad gear, books, artifacts, and rare old photographs. Photos of life during the railroad boom and the timber industry’s heyday are on display.

The Pocahontas County Free Library has long been associated with genealogy research in the county and currently houses a large and varied collection of research information.  The decision of the Genealogy Group to associate itself with the McClintic library was an easy one.   In 2004 the Library was recognized by the National Award for Library Services by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, based in Washington D. C.

Both the library and the historical society continue to be primary support for the Group.    Working together allows us to associate with positive influences and dynamic personalities whose objectives are to honor the past as we prepare for the future.  The Genealogy Group is a leader in the Historic Preservation movement.  Along with the Historical Society and the Library, the group is working to insure that the valuable pieces of our past are  maintained in an archival state so other generations can enjoy them.
