Marlinton is a place rich in history. Much of it is well-preserved thanks to its nationally-recognized library, the Pocahontas Historical Society and the efforts of the Genealogy Group of Pocahontas County.

“There ain’t no G in MARLINTON!” …so wrote Andrew Price, the first mayor of Marlinton. The town gets its name from Jacob Marlin who arrived here in 1749 with Stephen Sewell and built a cabin near the mouth of the Greenbrier River. This established the site as the first English settlement west of the Alleghenies.

McClintic Library
The McClintic Library is home to the largest West Virginia and Appalachian collection of any small library in the state and has a Heritage Room with local historical materials and facilities for genealogical research, as well as a subscription to Ancestry.com. The Pocahontas Libraries have an extensive oral history archive and play a major role in the county’s veterans oral history project. They have also partnered with local filmmakers.

Pocahontas County Historical Society Museum
The county’s own museum contains a collection of mementos from various eras of its history. And the grounds that surround it are a final resting place for people who lived there and Confederate soldiers who were once encamped along the river. The museum is open daily during the summer months.

The Genealogy Group of Pocahontas County
The Genealogy Group of Pocahontas County was formed in spring 2004. The Genealogy Group partners with two strong organizations in the County, the McClintic Library in Marlinton and the Pocahontas Historical Society. The Historical Society has been the vigilant advocate for all things historical for over 60 years. Their Museum, located on Rt 219 in Marlinton, is chock full of farm tools and equipment, railroad gear, books, artifacts, and rare old photographs.
